The Art of Self Promotion with Sincerity

Date / Time: Sunday, 23 October 2022 / 20:00 - 21:30 Pacific Time / 03:00 (+1d) - 04:30 (+1d) UTC
Format: Hybrid

You run into your department chair and they ask, “how are you doing?”. You are at the SMDM poster session and a colleague asks what’s new with work. Many people think their accomplishments will get noticed without saying anything to those who need to be impressed. Or they have difficulty describing their accomplishments briefly and effectively. People often worry about being seen as “bragging” or viewed as “uppity”, “bossy”, or “obnoxious”. In this highly interactive session, we will discuss the importance of sharing your achievements, even if it feels difficult, and describe strategies for highlighting accomplishments in ways that are sincere and effective in both 1:1 interactions and within a group setting. We will discuss this in the context of code switching and how one’s approach can vary depending on setting or audience. Finally, we will practice our “bragging” skills (i.e., elevator pitches, storytelling) with each other, so start thinking about your achievements now. This session will be based, in part, on the book “Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It” by Peggy Klaus.
